What is Hitamen?
Faces are also masks
Usually when playing ordinary men in Noh plays they do not wear Noh masks, this is called Hitamen. A face is also a mask.
Unlike Kabuki actors these ‘masks’ do not feature heavy make-up or dark circles, nor do they use their facial muscles eye movement in a flamboyant manner. The actors are required to perform without changing their facial expressions, just as if they were Noh masks.
