History of Noh.
The Second Period
A stage in which Buddhist rituals merged with traditional agricultural rituals, and the emergence of the Oni masks.
Sarugaku troupes participated in a Buddhist ritual called “Tsuinae” or “Oniyarai” which led to the introduction of Oni masks into the rituals. Because of this, from the Kamakura period to the beginning of the Muromachi period, Oni masks such as beshimi, shikami, tobide, and akujoh masks appeared.
The Okina masks and the Oni masks were respected as a pair of masks, and it is thought that they collaborated with each other to perform some kinds of magical and ceremonial art.
At the end of this period, Joh masks appeared following Oni masks.
